How Do I Use the Korean Number Converter?

Choose a direction, select the meaning of the number, enter the source and press Convert. Check the canonical digits and Korean result together: a reading is useful only when it represents the intended value and context. No account or paid conversion service is required. Keyboard users can select each control, enter a value and submit with Enter.

1. Choose the Direction and Context

Select Digits → Korean for a numerical source, Korean → digits for supported written number words, or Romanization → digits for the bounded romanization grammar. Choose Compare systems when you want to examine numeral forms without committing to a counter. Choose Objects & counters for a quantity, Won prices for an amount, or Phone digits for a code. A successful choice leaves the meaning visible in the context field. The common mistake is using quantity mode for a phone code, which changes leading-zero behavior.

2. Enter the Number and Check the Convention

Enter ordinary digits for an integer. Choose English separators for 12,345.60 or Spanish separators for 12.345,60. Both examples denote the same numerical value, including the final decimal zero. The plain-digits setting is deliberately stricter and rejects an ambiguous comma. A successful conversion displays canonical digits that you can compare with the source. Do not infer the convention merely from the language of the surrounding webpage: copied bank statements, spreadsheets and teaching materials can use different formats.

3. Inspect the Reading and Its Explanation

Use Result view to switch among Korean reading, digits, Revised Romanization, the rule explanation, four-digit groups and other accepted forms. The result frame keeps the main controls nearby instead of sending you into a long article. Long readings use Previous and Next within the working frame, preserving access to every part. A successful result gives both the intended number and its context. If a counter form differs from the bare number, compare the two rather than memorizing the shortened form in isolation.

4. Copy, Listen or Export

Copy uses the currently selected result view. More provides separate copy actions for Korean, digits, romanization and all fields, together with text download and settings sharing. Clipboard access can be unavailable under some browser permissions; the fallback selects the requested text for manual copying. Listen uses a Korean device voice when one is installed. Audio never starts automatically. Text conversion and export work independently of voice availability, so begin with the written result before comparing pronunciation.

Which Numeral System Does This Context Need?

Korean has Sino-Korean and native Korean number vocabulary, both written in Hangul. Context determines the preferred form; the alphabet does not determine the numeral system. This distinction explains why 일 and 하나 both represent one but appear in different expressions. The comparison mode gives a starting point, while a meaning-specific counter provides the form used in that phrase.

Meaning Typical selection Practical check
Prices and years Sino Check the amount and large units
Ordinary object counts Native for small counts Check the shortened ending
Phone digits Sino digit names Retain every zero and group
Spoken age with 살 Native for familiar small ages Distinguish 살 from formal 세
Minutes and seconds Sino Distinguish 분 for minutes from people
Everyday clock hours Native Keep the clock separate from elapsed hours
Assigned numbers Sino Distinguish a label from a frequency

The table gives teaching defaults rather than a universal prohibition against every alternative. NIKL consultation 316001 allows native and Sino forms with counters such as 명 and 병. A task asking specifically for a native form can prefer that answer while still recognizing a valid Sino alternative. Learn the larger patterns in Sino-Korean numbers before selecting exceptions by sound or spelling.

For a native cardinal as the main comparison result, open More and choose Native under Requested system. Supported whole numbers run from one through ninety-nine. The output retains the corresponding Sino form as an alternative. Zero, negative numbers, decimals and values above ninety-nine produce an actionable message asking for Sino or Recommended rather than an invented native cardinal.

Why Do Counters with the Same Spelling Differ?

The counter 분 can describe minutes or people politely. Minute readings use Sino numbers; the common small-person count uses native forms. Likewise 번 can express frequency or an assigned number. Two occurrences and number two are different meanings even when the printed suffix matches. Counter labels in this tool include those meanings, so select minutes, people, frequency or assigned number explicitly. A suffix-only shortcut cannot safely replace that decision.

The counter picker contains the forty entries in the existing chart and additional calendar, formal-age, measure and ordinal entries. English, Spanish and Korean search words help locate a counter under More. Search changes the offered choices, not the meaning of the current source. Choose the matching record and inspect the result explanation. The complete learning context belongs in choose a Korean counter; the converter applies a selected meaning to your value.

How the Conversion Works

Sino formatting splits the absolute integer into groups of four digits from the right. Each group has a value between zero and 9,999. The total is the sum of each group multiplied by 10,000 raised to its group position. A negative sign becomes 마이너스 in the written reading. Zero-valued groups disappear from quantity words, while digit codes retain their zero characters.

For 123456789, the group coefficients are 1, 2345 and 6789. Their contributions are one 억, 2345 만 and 6789 ones. The numeric breakdown is therefore 100,000,000 + 23,450,000 + 6,789. Group view links the Korean large-unit labels to the original digits. This helps English readers stop translating each comma group as thousand, million or billion when Korean uses a different grouping boundary.

When Does 일 Disappear from a Number?

The ordinary small-unit formatter omits a coefficient of one before 십, 백 and 천, giving ten, one hundred and one thousand without an extra initial digit word. Large units have their own wording choices. Conversational 만 and explicit 일만 can represent the same magnitude. The converter provides a style choice instead of declaring that one form is forbidden in every shop or document. Exact digit output remains the value check regardless of wording.

NIKL orthographic rules, including the guidance on number and unit spacing, provide the governing reference for authored explanations. The integer engine uses string groups and BigInt arithmetic rather than converting a twenty-digit quantity to a floating-point Number. The supported integer magnitude is below 10^20. That bound includes twenty-digit inputs after quantity leading zeros are normalized, while fractional precision is limited separately to twenty decimal digits.

Why Do Native Numbers Shorten before Counters?

The native cardinal names 하나, 둘, 셋 and 넷 become 한, 두, 세 and 네 before ordinary counters. Exactly twenty changes from 스물 to 스무. Compound twenty-one retains its tens stem and becomes 스물한, rather than 스무한. The change applies to the relevant ending, which is why a bare-versus-counter comparison is more informative than replacing every occurrence of a number word.

For twenty-four, the bare form is 스물넷. With the object counter 개, the reading is 스물네 개. The quantity still equals twenty-four; only the phrase form changes. Use native Korean counter forms for the broader vocabulary and use this tool to inspect a particular compound. Native everyday cardinals in this converter are bounded to one through ninety-nine, without making a historical claim that no other native numeral has ever existed.

What Happens above Ninety-Nine?

A native request above ninety-nine needs an explicit policy. The converter shows a complete Sino reading and an explanatory warning rather than constructing an invented native hundred. Some counting contexts allow a hybrid ending, such as a Sino hundred followed by a native before-counter form. Hybrid and measure variants require context-specific verification; a proposed alternative must not become a blanket replacement rule for all counters.

Age is also a context rather than a birth-date calculation here. The supplied age has a representational bound of zero to 130, and formal 세 differs from spoken 살. The tool reads an already known age; it does not infer a birthday or determine a legal age rule. Zero has no ordinary native cardinal entry in this bounded vocabulary, so a literal numerical zero uses a Sino reading instead of an invented native word.

Can 세 달 and 석 달 Both Be Used?

NIKL consultation 335470 confirms the alternatives 세 or 석 with 달, and 네 or 넉 with 달. This is a counter-specific variation rather than a universal shortening rule. The converter records such alternatives separately. Other traditional measure counters have their own forms and need dictionary and Korean reviewer confirmation before being described as reviewed.

The practical lesson is to select the object or duration first. Calendar June is a month name; six elapsed months is a duration. A counter rule for 달 does not transform every expression containing 월. The selected meaning, its source and the actual quantity should remain connected. These distinctions become particularly useful when moving from ordinary counts to money and digital codes.

Preserve a Mixed Fraction

Fractions accept a numerator and denominator, or a whole part followed by a space and a fraction: 2 1/3. The reading places the whole part first, then the denominator before the numerator. Korean → digits accepts the same whole-part construction. A negative sign belongs to the whole part of a signed mixed expression; a zero denominator is rejected. Conversion retains 2 2/6 exactly. Reduce fraction is a separate action that changes it to 2 1/3 and reports the original input. No fraction is silently rounded to a decimal.

Worked Examples: Counts, Prices and Phone Codes

Read Twenty-Four Objects

Choose Objects & counters, enter 24 and select objects 개. Convert produces 스물네 개, while the bare comparison shows 스물넷. The final four becomes 네 before the counter. Switch Result view to digits to verify 24, then to the explanation to inspect the change. Asking for a Sino alternative changes the selected system without changing the count. This example demonstrates a phrase-form change rather than arithmetic.

For a phone extension, use the separate Phone extension field under More. It accepts up to eight digits and keeps leading zeros. The main number remains the canonical phone string, while exported fields retain the extension separately. Batch phone rows can append a tab-separated extension or an explicit ext 007 suffix. Check the main groups and extension before copying; converter phone values are never stored as history.

Read Twenty Thousand Won

Choose Won prices and enter 20000. The conversational reading is 이만 원: two groups of ten thousand won. Group view identifies the 만 boundary, which prevents an English thousand-group interpretation from being copied into the Korean words. For larger amounts, check each four-digit group before using an exported amount in another document. The converter reads the amount; it does not quote an exchange rate or calculate purchasing power. Learn the surrounding shopping expressions in read Korean prices.

Keep a Phone Code Intact

Choose Phone digits and enter 010-1234-5678. The reading preserves the first group as 공일공 and reads the remaining groups digit by digit. Change the zero option to 영 if that is the convention you need, or explicitly enable 에 between groups. No leading zero is discarded, and group pauses preserve the structure of the code. The same characters entered as a quantity would mean a different task. The guide to Korean phone digits explains the conversational setting beyond this conversion.

Keep Decimal Precision and Fraction Order

Enter 3.140 with the plain or English format. The fractional reading retains all three digits, including the terminal zero; the result does not round to 3.14. For 1/3, choose Fractions. The denominator is read before 분의 and the numerator after it. A successful conversion preserves 1/3 in canonical digits, allowing you to inspect the order directly. Percentages reuse the exact decimal reader and append the percentage unit rather than multiplying the source value.

How Do Signs, Decimals and Fractions Behave?

Signed decimal conversion separates the whole part from the fractional digit sequence. The whole part follows Sino quantity rules. After 점, each decimal position uses its digit name, including zero. This is a reading of the notation, not a change in numerical precision. Signed counts, ages and ordinals are rejected where the selected context requires a nonnegative integer, with the original input preserved for correction.

Fractions use numerator and denominator fields represented by the slash notation. A zero denominator is invalid. A negative denominator is normalized by moving the sign to the numerator, preserving the mathematical value. No fraction reduces automatically. If a class needs a simplified form, choose Reduce fraction explicitly; the feedback identifies the original expression. The reduction uses an integer greatest-common-divisor calculation, which avoids decimal rounding and remains exact for the supported bounds.

Decimal separator selection is part of the input contract. The string 1,234 is plausibly an English grouped integer or a Spanish decimal. A plain parser rejects it, while an explicit convention determines the canonical result. Verify that interpretation before copying the reading. Locale language and numeral separators often agree, but that agreement is not guaranteed when a source is pasted from somewhere else.

Can Korean Words Be Converted Back to Digits?

Supported number words convert back through a restricted grammar. The engine recognizes Sino digits and units, the bounded native cardinal and before-counter forms, decimal digit sequences and fraction order. Known counter suffixes belong to a selected counter meaning. Arbitrary sentences are outside this grammar: the converter does not extract a likely number from prose or treat every 이 as a numeral in a full sentence.

Sino units must descend within their group. Repeated large units or an ascending small-unit expression are errors instead of silently accepted arithmetic. This matters because a permissive replacement of every Korean character with a numerical value can give a plausible result for invalid spelling. After parsing, inspect the canonical digits and regenerate the forward reading to see a normalized spelling. Keep any accepted wording variant separate from malformed input.

What Can Romanization Tell Me?

Romanization is a reading aid based on the shared Revised Romanization engine. It is not English phonetic spelling, and it is not a general reversible substitute for Hangul. The reverse romanization feature is bounded to supported numeral forms through 9,999 and native forms through ninety-nine, with a selected counter context. Spaces and hyphens may aid inspection, but unfamiliar romanized prose is not interpreted as a number.

The letters eo and eu represent Korean vowel conventions rather than ordinary English syllables. Sound changes can also make a written word and its spoken form differ. The shared romanization rules generate the display, and Min-ji Park reviewed and signed off the Korean examples and explanations on this page on 15 October 2026. A passed software test confirms implemented behavior; it does not establish that every proposed phrase has been linguistically approved.

When Should I Choose Document Amount Wording?

Choose document wording only when a recipient asks for a conventional fully written amount. The result includes the exact numeric checksum beside its explanation, so compare the digit amount before transferring the words. Korean consultation guidance distinguishes document conventions from a universal orthographic law. A form-specific instruction therefore takes priority over a generic converter style, and a generated string cannot establish a document’s legal validity.

Conversational price readings and formal strings serve different tasks. An explicit leading coefficient can make a large unit clearer in a document while sounding different from a concise everyday reading. The amount stays unchanged. The converter neither validates a financial instrument nor advises on a transaction; it supplies a transparent wording option that you can compare with the required form.

Number and Counter Reference

Digits Sino cardinal Native cardinal Native before counter
1 일 하나 한
2 이 둘 두
3 삼 셋 세
4 사 넷 네
10 십 열 열
20 이십 스물 스무
21 이십일 스물하나 스물한
24 이십사 스물넷 스물네

The reference table separates system choice from phrase choice. Twenty in the Sino column does not shorten to the native before-counter form; that transformation belongs within the native system. Twenty-one also shows why applying the special twenty form to every twenty-compound is incorrect. Learn a few reconstructible examples before relying on longer outputs, and keep each counter’s meaning visible while practicing.

Common Mistakes and Recoveries

  • A phone code loses its zeros: choose Phone digits and paste the original code again.
  • A comma changes the intended value: select the source’s separator convention and inspect canonical digits.
  • A native compound uses the wrong ending: compare the bare and before-counter views.
  • A suffix has two meanings: select the semantic counter, such as minutes or polite people.
  • A fraction looks reversed: check that the denominator precedes 분의 and confirm the canonical slash form.
  • A reverse phrase fails: remove surrounding prose and enter only a supported number expression with the selected context.

Every recovery preserves the original meaning before changing a control. Reset clears the current conversion state, while a downloaded file remains your responsibility. For batch work, inspect each row’s error rather than treating one valid row as proof that all rows are valid. The report includes source and context so another reader can reconstruct the intended task.

Accuracy, Audio, Privacy and Offline Use

The text engine operates locally once its JavaScript is loaded. It needs no paid API, account or analytics service, and phone inputs are not persisted as history. Settings links use URL fragments; including the numerical value is a separate explicit action. A copied link containing a phone code still reveals that code to whoever receives the link. Share settings alone when an example does not need a personal value.

Device speech is a separate browser capability. Availability depends on installed voices, and a remote operating-system voice may need network access. The converter refuses unavailable voice requests without disabling the written result. Listen, slow playback, pause, resume and stop are user actions. No generated device audio is captured as a downloadable recording, and speech playback does not assess the learner’s pronunciation.

Offline use after the page is loaded keeps the in-memory text controls functional. A first offline visit or an uncached reload still depends on browser caching behavior. No blanket claim is made that every audio voice works offline. The article and static references remain readable without an interactive engine, while live conversion requires JavaScript. Keyboard labels, focus outlines and committed result announcements support completion without a pointer.

Korean phrase, alternative-counter and formal-money review remains an editorial responsibility. The review status in source metadata records Min-ji Park’s sign-off on 15 October 2026. Correction reports should include the rule version and rule ID rather than a private number. Software tests check precision, bounds and grammar failures separately from this linguistic approval, helping a reviewer identify the exact behavior that needs attention.

How to Use the Korean Date Converter

Select Dates & time in the context picker, then choose Date, Time, Date + time or Duration. Enter the known fields, choose the reading profile and press Format. Inspect the interpreted fields before copying. A calendar date has no implicit timezone conversion, while a clock time needs its intended hour convention. The date workspace shares the same page and number rules rather than creating a separate converter URL.

ISO input uses year-month-day: 2026-06-10 is June 10, 2026. Slash or dotted imports need an explicit date order when more than one interpretation is possible. For 06/10/2026, June 10 and October 6 are different candidates. Choose MDY or DMY deliberately. A two-digit year additionally needs a century; the converter does not invent 2026 from 26. Successful input shows the confirmed civil date in the digits view.

Full dates validate the actual month length and leap-year rule. Gregorian years divisible by four are leap years, except century years unless divisible by four hundred. Thus 2000-02-29 is valid, while 1900-02-29 and 2100-02-29 are invalid. An impossible day does not roll into the following month. Partial month-and-day input explicitly retains an unknown year; February 29 remains conditional until the year is supplied. Historical dates use a proleptic Gregorian model, without claiming equivalence to Korea’s historical calendar.

Why Are June and October Spelled 유월 and 시월?

June and October use the fixed lexical month names 유월 and 시월. The NIKL month explanation relates these conventional readings to the orthographic rule for established customary sounds. Learn each name as a calendar word rather than removing the same consonant from every numeral. Six months of duration is 육 개월 or a contextually appropriate native-month expression; it is never made by appending 개월 to 유.

A complete written date separates year, month and day meanings even when an accepted notation attaches the units. The example 2026-06-10 reads 이천이십육 년 유월 십 일 in the learner-spaced view. Numeric units, spaced dots, ISO and month-day output are different display styles for the confirmed date. The view choice does not infer a missing year or change the date value. See Korean date readings for the surrounding classroom and conversational conventions.

Weekdays derive from the confirmed date, not a timezone-shifted midnight timestamp. October 10, 2026 is Saturday. If a supplied Korean weekday conflicts with the numerical date, correct the date or weekday instead of accepting a mismatched pair. The relative-date view compares the target with an explicit reference date: today, yesterday, tomorrow and neighboring expressions have meaning only relative to that reference. Now captures a fixed snapshot in the chosen reference zone; it does not silently keep changing an input.

How Do Clock Hours Differ from Duration Hours?

An ordinary clock reading combines native hour forms with Sino minutes and seconds. At 15:20, the everyday twelve-hour profile gives 오후 세 시 이십 분. A duration of three hours uses 시간 rather than 시. Calendar months and duration months also use different units. The duration builder retains years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds independently, without asserting that every calendar month equals thirty days.

The institutional twenty-four-hour profile uses Sino hour readings, making the selected convention visible. NIKL consultation 330055 describes everyday native hours and contextual institutional Sino usage. A valid contextual alternative is therefore not universally incorrect. Select the profile according to the task; the numerical twenty-four-hour display alone does not require one universal spoken system. The lesson on telling time in Korean explains the broader speaking pattern.

What Do Noon, Midnight and Half-past Mean?

Noon corresponds to 12:00 and has the alias 정오; midnight corresponds to 00:00 and has the alias 자정. The everyday clock reading still includes 오전 or 오후. A reverse expression such as 세 시 lacks enough information to choose 03:00 or 15:00, so the converter presents both candidates. A schedule endpoint written 24:00 requires explicit confirmation that it means the following day at 00:00.

Half-past 반 can replace thirty minutes when no nonzero seconds remain. At 15:30:01, the reader retains thirty minutes and one second rather than discarding that second. Exact-hour 정각 is an optional form when minutes and seconds are zero. Zero units can be included explicitly or omitted for a shorter reading. The analog view allows minute-hand dragging and equivalent adjustment buttons, with a time field providing the precise numerical value.

Worked Date and Time Examples

For a birthday on June 10, 2026, enter 2026-06-10 in Date mode and confirm the written reading and civil-date digits. A birthday is a date-only fact; changing the browser or reference zone does not move it to June 9. Sentence templates add a selected register to known fields. The register changes the wording around the date, rather than switching a calendar year into native numerals. Templates and their literal glosses remain subject to Korean editorial confirmation.

For a meeting at 15:20, choose the everyday profile and inspect 오후 세 시 이십 분. Add the meeting date in Date + time if it is known. For shop hours from 23:00 to 01:00, the time-range template explicitly identifies the closing time as next day when an overnight interpretation is selected. Keep the opening and closing fields visible while inspecting the phrase, rather than hiding the date boundary inside an unlabeled timestamp.

Lunar input is a different calendar workflow. Select ordinary, leap or unknown lunar-month state and inspect the shared calendar adapter’s candidates and provenance. Confirm a returned Gregorian date before the language formatter uses it. Retain the calendar choice and source with the confirmed date before formatting it. Timezone conversion similarly belongs to a confirmed source date, source time and source and target zones; ambiguous daylight-saving wall times need an explicit choice in the shared zone engine.

Batch Dates and Practice

Batch dates accepts up to 500 rows and 100 KB, preserving row-level errors. Confirm the date order for the imported source before reviewing one row at a time. Text, CSV, TSV and JSON exports retain the selected result information; spreadsheet exports protect leading formula characters. No imported birthday list is automatically saved as history. Inspect a report for personal values before sending it to another person or classroom.

Date and time practice provides forward, reverse and listening tasks, optional timers, four difficulty levels and an untimed alternative. A listening task depends on an available Korean voice. Spoken-answer work compares an editable transcription’s meaning; recognition uncertainty must not become a pronunciation grade. Optional local results can be exported or deleted. Practice dates use illustrative values, while the formatter keeps personal source dates separate from automatic practice persistence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does This Tool Change the Value of a Fraction?

The converter preserves the fraction you enter. For 2/6, the reading keeps denominator six and numerator two. Choose Reduce fraction explicitly to obtain 1/3; the feedback retains the original expression. Neither conversion nor reduction silently rounds the fraction into a decimal, and a zero denominator is rejected.

Can I Use a Comma as the Decimal Separator?

Yes. Choose Spanish separators before entering a decimal such as 12,5. English separators interpret commas as grouping marks and points as decimal marks. A plain number input rejects comma ambiguity. Check the canonical digits in the result before copying, particularly when pasting a number from another country.

Will 007 Keep Its Zeros?

Phone digit mode preserves 007 as three separate digits, including the two initial zeros. Quantity mode treats the same input as the number seven and removes quantity leading zeros. Choose the context according to what the characters mean: a code identifies something, while a quantity measures how much there is.

Why Can Two Correct Price Readings Look Different?

Large-unit wording has conversational and explicit variants. For example, a leading 만 can be expressed with an explicit 일 in an appropriate context. The selected style changes the written reading, not the numeric amount. Document wording is a convention to check against the recipient’s requested form, rather than a universal legal requirement.

Does the Listen Button Check My Pronunciation?

Listen reads the generated text through an available Korean device voice. It does not record you, recognize your answer or grade pronunciation. A Korean voice may be absent, and some operating-system voices require network access. Text conversion remains available when audio cannot play; choose Stop to cancel playback.

Can I Download a List for Class?

Batch mode accepts up to 100 number rows and reports errors separately for each row. Use the row controls to inspect individual readings, then download the complete text report through More. The export includes the context and original input, so check for private phone numbers before distributing a classroom file.

Use the Korean number converter to check one meaningful example, explain its system and counter, then try a second value without copying the first answer. The compact practice view tests an object count, and practice Korean numbers leads to the dedicated quiz. Compare your response with the canonical quantity as well as the phrase ending. A useful practice answer preserves both the value and the intended context.
